Mireille a fait beaucoup pour le laboratoire Fresnel dans son ensemble comme pour ses membres dans leurs individualités.
C'était une collègue pour certains, une amie pour d'autres et c'était avant tout quelqu'un d'une humanité rare. Elle avait de la grandeur en elle et un courage qui force le respect. Elle nous manquera à tous.

SPIE Senior Member Mireille Commandré, professor of optics at Ecole Centrale Marseille and team leader at the Institut Fresnel, died 11 July 2017. She was 60 years old.

Commandré led the Interaction Laser Matière team at Institut Fresnel. The 12-person group conducts research on the physics and applications of the phenomena of laser matter interaction with high luminous flux.

In a statement on the Institut’s website, her colleagues shared, "Mireille did a lot for the lab as a whole and for its individual members. She was a colleague for some, a friend for others, and above all, someone of rare humanity. She had greatness in herself and a courage that forces respect. She will be missed by us all."

She was equally admired among her peers at the Society, a valued member of the SPIE Laser Damage community. She served on several program committees, on review committees, and as session chair. She was a frequent presenter at SPIE conferences and published proceeding with the Society dozens of times. She also published half a dozen articles in Optical Engineering. In recognition of her work and contributions, she was made a Senior Member of the Society in 2016.
